My First LFR!

Some of you may have seen via twitter that last night I did my first ever Looking for Raid (LFR) and so I thought I'd talk about it and share some screenshots of dead baddies with you (which I believe is customary if you're at the forefront of raiding and getting world/server firsts... yes, I'm a little behind!).

Trash before the first boss.
I've always been a non-raider in a primarily raiding, yet very social, guild. As of late the guild has had some issues with the number of people available to raid etc. and so has shifted it's focus more to the social aspects of WoW. Our guild master, who was very raid orientated, also left the game for personal reasons and so my boyfriend took over. [On a side note the boyf is back blogging again here]. None of these changes really bothered me and in fact I guess it made things more benefical for me. Although, a lot of people I'd grown to know who were part of the raid team have subsequently left or become in-active.

I've never been particularly inclined to raid. Whilst my gear was no where near good enough I could have raided with my guild a number of times as a place filler whilst a more suitable player was found. In fact, I acted as a place filler for the first few bosses of Dragonsoul once or twice but I mostly declined such offers. I think one reason why I've never been worried about raiding is because I really don't care about gear and iLevels!

Bright colours.
With MoP and Patch 5.2 things changed for me. I was super excited about the Isle of Giants and to a lesser extent the Isle of Thunder. Sadly, my gear isn't good enough and I find surviving extremely hard. I know this is in part due to my unorthodox way of playing my hunter but I have no doubt that my gear score doesn't help.

The boyfriend suggested I go and queue for a raid a while ago and I forgot all about it until he reminded me yesterday. I was quite uneasy about going in alone - not knowing what to expect in general or any tactics - and so he joined me on one of his alts. Obviously it was only the first LFR installment which consisted of three bosses (I think).

Dead second boss - I think.
I assume that we had a reasonably good group as we didn't wipe at all and it all seemed to go pretty smoothly - to my untrained eye atleast. I didn't die at all which was quite a relief and even better was that I wan't right at the bottom of the damage recount! Sadly I didn't get any gear but I did get gold and some achievs. All in all it went very well and I'm glad I made that first step, with a little prodding.

I got a fair few responses on twitter last night, mostly congratulations, but a couple from people who like me were scared of randomly queueing for LFR. If you are one of those people I'd say it's worth doing - I believe in trying things once atleast. But I totally understand how you're feeling about it and would recommend going with someone, maybe a guildie, who can talk you through things or atleast give you moral support!

The end! My poor little screen was quite chaotic.
The question now is will I continue to raid - either LFR or with organised groups? I think I will continue doing LFR's to hopefully get some better gear. Having said that I think it will be a while yet before I'm entering groups alone! As I mentioned earlier, my guilds GM left but he is due to be returning to the game soon and so the guild may start getting back into raiding again. I have no idea if I will ever get into raiding properly or even seriously but I can atleast now say that I've done LFR.

  1. I'm doing this on my iPad so hope it doesn't take over and change everything, lol! That is so great! I recently did a couple LFRs too, but only when given a big push by a guildmate. Have not tried one alone yet. Baby steps! Can't figure out why world bosses don't count for me, I don't mind doing them by myself.

    1. Well your iPad doesn't seem to have commandeered your comment! Before last night and the subsequent comments I thought I was the only person who was, I guess you'd say, intimidated by LFR but I'm not. Baby steps are certainly the way forward - I had to take many before I'd do dungeons alone. I've done world bosses with guildies but never aloen but I'd definately feel safer doing that alone than LFR.

  2. Congratz again! I don't think we can que for an LFR together since you're EU and I'm US. I've never tried that though, so it would be interesting to find out. Beefing up your gear definitely helps with survivability and getting your dailies done faster. Lately I've quit raiding regular content and only getting into an LFR here or there. I'll be doing more though, since I found out that I need more attack power in order to solo heal Dreamwalker of ICC on my hunter. Soloing old content has always been a favorite thing of mine ever since I started playing WoW.

    1. Thanks. I don't really know how it works with the whole EU-US thing. Can you even be battle tag/real id friends? My gear needs some serious beefing up! I do solo really old content which my gear's fine for but not the newer stuff that's now 'old' content.

  4. Yay grats on braving the LFR's, its not even the bosses that are the problem its whoever you get lumbered with in your group that makes or breaks it.

  5. Grats! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

I used to be pretty afraid of the trolls in LFR and the pressure, but I guess the more you do, the easier it becomes. /ignore is your best friend!

    1. Thanks. I agree - the more I go into LFR the more confident I'll (hopefully) get and the easier it will be :)

  6. Yay! Go you! I'm a bit like you in that I don't care about gear and ilvls, but I do enjoy a good raid. While raiding with my guild is always the most fun (we are so incredibly average and laugh our asses off when we wipe), I find LFR a great way to monitor "how I'm doing" in terms of dps or healing. It's one thing to raid with your guild where you know what your "job" is, but in LFR, I like the idea of "seeing where I can be of most benefit" depending on what classes etc are in the raid with me.

    1. Thanks. Yeah, whilst the concept of raiding with complete strangers (and the potential to get in trouble for doing something wrong) scares me I do agree that it's probably the best way to check how youre doing & more of a challenge etc.
